JLPT 2026 Banner

If you’re setting your sights on a JLPT certification in 2026, you’re making a great move for your professional and personal development. However, the application process can be a bit confusing since it changes depending on where you are in the world.

Here is how to navigate the process and secure your spot without the headache.

1. Know Your Timeline

The JLPT is held twice a year globally. While the months are standard, deadlines are strictly local.

  • July Test: Registration typically opens in March/April.

  • December Test: Registration typically opens in August/September.

Pro-tip: Check your local test center’s website the moment the year begins. Deadlines are final—if you miss them, there is no "late registration" option.

2. The Application Workflow

The process generally follows these four steps:

  1. Locate Your Center: Go to the official JLPT website and find your country’s specific portal. Each region manages its own registration.

  2. Create Your Account: You’ll need a valid email and a digital photo ready to upload. Make sure the photo meets the specific size and quality requirements of your testing center.

  3. Choose Your Level: Select your level (N5–N1) carefully. Once you confirm, changing your level later is often impossible. Not sure which one to pick? Take an online mock test first to ensure your registration is realistic.

  4. Complete Payment: Fees generally range from $50–$100 USD. Ensure you have your credit card or bank transfer details ready, as some systems have a short time limit to complete the checkout process.

3. Don't Lose Your Voucher

After your payment clears, you will be issued a Test Voucher (受験票).

  • Keep it safe. You cannot enter the exam hall without this physical or digital document.

  • Check the details. Ensure your name and test level are printed correctly. If there’s an error, contact your testing center immediately.

4. What You Need Before You Start

Don’t start the application until you have these on your desk:

  • Government-issued ID: Use the one you will actually bring to the test center.

  • Digital Photo: Must be professional, clear, and meet the test center’s aspect ratio.

  • Payment Method: Verified and ready to go.
